The following local update was published on August 8, 2026 by Modern Roots Realty Group, a dedicated real estate professional serving the Central Texas area.

A renovation can absolutely make your home better for you without making it better for the next buyer.

Removing a bedroom for a larger primary suite, converting the garage into living space, or building out a very specific hobby room may improve your day-to-day life, but it can also make the home work for fewer people later.

Resale value is not just about how much money went into the project. It’s also about how broadly useful that change is to the buyers who will eventually be comparing your home to others nearby.

That doesn’t mean you should avoid personalizing your home. If you plan to stay for years and the renovation meaningfully improves how you live, that may be completely worth it. Just understand the tradeoff before making a major structural change.

The more specialized the renovation, the more important it is to ask: Will the next buyer see this as an upgrade too, or something they’ll need to undo?
